Identifying, Treating and Preventing Lameness in Sows

چکیده

Introduction Lameness is generally defined as “incapable of normal locomotion, deviating from the normal gate [1].” Lameness can result from damage to any of the structures involved in locomotion including the bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and blood supply of the shoulder, hock, stifle, foot, toe or hoof. A significant portion of lesions that can cause lameness are not visible on external examination in typical production settings and similarly a portion of the causes of lameness do not have adequate therapies that can be administered in a production setting. The goal of this discussion is to illustrate how to identify lameness, determine treatment options and apply preventive measures for those causes that can successfully be addressed in a production setting. Figure 1 provides a decision tree to triage suspected lameness issues in a sow population.

Assessment of lameness in sows using gait, footprints, postural behaviour and foot lesion analysis.

Lameness in sows has an economic impact on pig production and is a major welfare concern. The aim of the present project was to develop methods to evaluate and quantify lameness in breeding sows. Five methods to study lameness were compared between themselves and with visual gait scoring used as a reference: footprint analysis, kinematics, accelerometers, lying-to-standing transition and foot l...

The economic and welfare impact of lameness in sows in England

Lameness in pigs is a major welfare concern and one of the most commonly reported reasons to premature culling of breeding sows. The prevalence of lameness in sows was estimated from 113 English pig breeding units and different risk factors associated with the occurrence of lameness were examined, followed by an assessment of the economic costs of lameness in sows. The prevalence of lameness in...

Validation of a lameness model in sows using physiological and mechanical measurements1

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to develop a validated, transient, chemically induced lameness model in sows using subjective and objective lameness detection tools. Experiment 1 determined an effective joint injection technique based on volume and placement of dye using feet collected from 9 fi nisher pigs and 10 multiparity cull sow carcasses. Experiment 2 confi rmed the injection t...

Risk factors of lameness in sows in England.

Lameness in pigs is a major welfare concern and one of the most commonly reported reasons for premature culling of breeding sows. In this study, the prevalence of lameness in sows was estimated using data from 76 pig breeding units in England and risk factors associated with the occurrence of lameness were examined. The prevalence of lameness in sows was 4.5% (farm median 5.0%, range 0-40%), wi...

Prevalence of lameness and claw lesions during different stages in the reproductive cycle of sows and the impact on reproduction results

Lameness in sows is an emerging disease condition with major effects on animal welfare and economics. Yet the direct impact on reproduction results remains unclear. The present field study investigated the impact of lameness and claw lesions throughout the reproductive cycle on (re)production results of sows. In five farms, a total of 491 group-housed sows were followed up for a period of one r...
